Since this movie came out before I was even born, I was not familiar with this actress or her works.Setting: the Ghetto and poor in the late 1960s.Bad lighting and average looking costumes.Ironically, when I was actually looking for the film in the $5 dollar bin it wasn’t there but thank goodness for YouTube! However, I figured that since Houston was doing the remake, I wanted to see the original first for comparison. I saw the movie countless times in the $5 dollar Wal-Mart bin but never paid it any mind because I had heard nothing about it. I never paid much attention to this film until I heard that there was going to be a remake with Whitney Houston in it.In the end, she reunites with Stix and performs by herself on stage. From there on, Sparkle must find her own success because she can no longer hide behind the shadow of her sister. Her sister, Sister, gets caught up in an abusive relationship and cocaine use which eventually leads to her death. However, Levi drops out of the group to work for the local gangster Satin. The Williams sisters- Sister, Dolores and Sparkle are singers in their local church but their friends Stix (also Sparkle’s love interest) and Levi who arranges the 5 of them into a singing group called “The Hearts.” The Hearts enter a local talent contest and win with the help of Sister’s sex and stage appeal.
General Synopsis: Set in the late 1950s, Sparkle is the story of a young girl trying to make it as a professional singer but must overcome the obstacles of her family falling apart.In this post, I will be comparing the 1976 version of the musical drama “Sparkle” to the so called “new and improved” 2012 version of “Sparkle.” What motivated me to compare these two versions of the same movie was ultimately two things: 1) I have very strong opinions pertaining both films but 2) I ordered 1976 version from Amazon and received the 2012 version.
